Stopping Bad Breath Bart

"Pee-ew! You smell like a skunk soaking in sardine nectar for a week."

OK, so I can be a little candid every now and then. It's not something I would say to Attila the Hun during a pre-battle pep rally. But it was not Attila the Hun standing in front of me. It was just my buddy Bart.

"Pee-ew! You have bad breath."

So when the phone rang that night, the last person I expected to greet me in a cheery voice was Bad Breath Bart. "Hey, Happy Guy. I'm feeling great," he said. "Want to guess why?"

"You just won the gold medal for the ten-meter turkey toss?"

"Nope," he replied. "But thanks for the tip. I'll start training for it tomorrow."

"OK, I give up. Why do you feel so great?"

"Because I discovered an easy way to stop bad breath," he declared. "Want to guess how?"

"You bought a book on stopping bad breath and you are following the instructions?"

"Sa-ay, that's a good idea," Bad Breath Bart said. "But that's not it. My plan is even simpler. I covered up my bad breath."

"Bart, that won't work. Since Julius Caesar first invaded Paris and declared 'Veni Vidi Vino', people have been trying to cover up their breath. But mint just is not strong enough."

Editor's note: I've already had my say on the great mint conspiracy in a previous column on toothpaste and jelly beans.

"Bingo!" he shouted. "Mint is too weak, so I found something stronger. Want to guess what?"

"You've been rinsing with five-week-old milk?"

"Nope."

"You've discovered that cologne is best taken internally?"

"Nope."

"You downed a bottle of vanilla extract, mistaking it for beer?"

"Nope."

This guessing game was giving me headaches and foot cramps. "I give up, Bart. What's your secret to stopping bad breath?"

"Garlic," he declared.

"Garlic?"

"Garlic. Now nobody can smell my bad breath, because all they smell is garlic," he beamed.

"Garlic?"

"Of course, there are some side effects," Bad Breath Bart noted. "For instance, my pet vampire has run away. And this afternoon I blew a kiss to my wife, and she slammed the door on my face."

"Can I offer an alternative, Bart? Something that won't put your nose in a cast every time you get the irresistible urge to blow at your wife?"

"Sure."

"Try using some mouthwash with cetylpyridinium chloride in it. That always works for me."

"Wow. That's a mouthful," Bad Breath Bart exclaimed.

I was glad to have finally given Bad Breath Bart a mouthful that would actually help him cure his problem. I did not anticipate the call I would receive the very next evening.

"Hey, Happy Guy. Thanks for the tip," Bad Breath Bart said. "That cetlip... cettap... centapyr... That unpronounceable mouthwash ingredient is superb."

"Excellent!" I was thrilled that he had taken my advice and that it was working so well.

"Yeah. It really tastes great," he continued.

"Tastes great?"

"You bet. And so filling, too."

Suddenly I felt an ominous sensation closing in. "What do you mean by 'filling'?"

"After taking that cetilp... cettep... certip... that unpronounceable concoction, I don't feel hungry anymore," he explained.

"Bart, what did you put in that concoction?"

"Oh, the usual – ten scoops of ice cream, a cup or two of milk, a bag of chocolate chips, half a banana, some corn flakes, a wombat's ear and the juice out of the maraschino cherry jar," he responded.

"But that won't stop your bad breath."

"Oops. I also added that cetip... cetpe... certilp... that unpronounceable ingredient," he added. "It sure tasted good."

Just then, my wife entered the room. "Honey, I just made you one of your favorite banana-strawberry milkshakes," she said with a smile.

I looked at the glass she placed in my hand. I looked at it from the top. I looked at it from the bottom. I looked all around it.

"What are you looking for," she asked.

I knew she would not believe me. "Chocolate chips and corn flakes."

Bad Breath (Halitosis).

Bad breath (Halitosis) is widespread and quite common. You have probably discretely stepped away from friends or colleagues with bad breath. But it can also be a shock to realize that others, for the same reason, may be edging (discretely) away from you!

How can you know if your breath is offensive?

Try this simple bad breath(Halitosis) test:
Lick the inside of your wrist and wait 4 seconds. Now smell your wrist. If you don't like what smell, your breath does not smell good either. Easy, no? An accurate and portable diagnosis!

What causes bad breath?

· Not enough water in your body, dehydration.
· Gum or tooth problems/ disease
· Intestinal/ stomach disorders, yeast infection
· Use of medications
· Stress

Remedies for Bad Breath (Halitosis)

1. Water - yes, water! Many people suffer from chronic dehydration because they don't drink drink the 8-12 glasses of water a day that the body needs. This common form of dehydration causes much common bad breath. You can improve your breath - and give a big lift to your health - simply by drinking enough water.

2. Recently eaten food that hasn't been brushed out can quickly smell bad. The "cure" then is to simply brush or floss. For gum disease and decay you must visit your dentist. And for improved oral hygiene, put a few drops of Oil of Oregano on your toothbrush or to swish it in your mouth as a mouthwash. Did you know that Oil of Oregano is antibacterial/ anti viral/ anti fungus and anti parasite? It seeks out these health impediments everywhere in the body. At the first signs of infection, Oil of Oregano is your great first line of defense.

3. For disturbed digestion you should see your doctor. But for mild problems such as GERD and acid reflux, take probiotics in the form acidophilus or kefir. For worse stomach problems try ¼ cup of Aloe vera before breakfast. Do this for at least 3 weeks. For my friend Peter this completely healed his stomach ulcer! Most GERD are related to the H pylori, which is a bacteria found in meats that haven't been thoroughly cooked. If you like your meat rare, take Oil of Oregano on a regular basis as a preventive measure.

3. When you are under too much stress your digestive system doesn't circulate enough oxygen (the energy goes into a fight or flight mode). This makes your digestive tract a breeding ground for the wrong bacteria - and for bad breath as well. Be sure to introduce deep, relaxed breathing throughout your busy day.

4. Eat raw parsley, chew on anise seed or cardamom, nutmeg or fennel - they're natural breath fresheners that don't just mask odors, but actually freshen the breath.

5. Eat plenty of vegetables, fruit and whole grains; avoid white flour products like white bread and pastas, as well as sugared juices and sodas.

5. You may have an undetected yeast infection. Find out for yourself by performing a simple self-test for yeast/candida overgrowth.

6. Chew your food well and do not drink fluids with your food. Take no food two hours before bedtime and try to not take food for 12 hours after dinner.

7. Eliminate as often as you can. Try to have three bowel movements a day. If you need some help, try 4 ounces of prune juice with 4 ounces of magnesium citrate. (My R.N. friend Marie calls this "The Bomb".) For more help try 2000 mg. of vitamin C with electrolytes every hour. Do this for 4 hours or more, until you start to have loose stools. (This also works well for headaches and boosts your immune system.

8. Drink at least 2 cups of kefir a day. This helps your intestinal flora regain its natural balance of bacteria.

Remember - fresh, clean breath is a reflection of good health, and health is an ongoing process. Stick with it! Follow my suggestions, and keep a log of what you do and the effects you see. This simple tracking process can help you pinpoint what is truly effective. You will be inspired by your own success!

Warmly, Pieternel van Giersbergen.

How to Cure Bad Breath Permanently

As humans, being liked, popular and sought after is a natural desire inherent in each of us. This is why deodorants, toothpastes, gym memberships and fancy cars sell at astronomical rates. This is also why mints are so popular and hardly a day goes by without someone at work, school or in public asking you "do you have some gum?" You already know what that person may be trying to curb or correct: Bad Breath. (It also relieves you this person didn't offer you some!)

I wrote once in an article in my blog titled "You've lost the weight but how clean are you on the inside?" that exterior indications-though very convincing and at times correct-don't necessary depict proper health, as disease may manifest itself in various ways.

One strong indication of disease is always stench, as a result, if you suffer from bad breath or as is Medically diagnosed, halitosis, this is a sign that you need to make some drastic dietetic changes or undergo a cleanse to curb this unpleasant occurrence.

Using toothpastes (especially the controversial and hazardous fluorinated ones), mints and chewing-gums to curb bad breath, like any artificial drug for any disease, doesn't cure this ailment but only masks its symptoms temporarily-only for it to come back in full force. This explains why we as humans become addicted to all sorts of unnatural and oft time hazardous substances ranging from pain killers to alcohol.

The necessary and very effective measures one should take in eliminating bad breath are the following (you can trust this author who even upon waking up doesn't have the so-called "morning breath", falsely and commonly accepted as being natural…nothing my friends could be further from the truth!)

1. Make a change in your diet; for as is known in every culture known to man; "You are what you eat!" Hippocrates- the Father of Medicine once said: "Let your foods be your medicine and your medicines your food", well "what should I eat?" the uninformed might ask: Plain and simple: alkaline forming/mucus binding foods also known as, you guessed it right (if you've read my other articles elsewhere) Fruits and Vegetables.

One common indication of disease besides stench is always mucus and this is introduced into the body by only one means, what you consume, therefore all measures should be taken to eat the foods that not only nourish you but have the added ability and benefit of being able to bind and eradicate the excessive mucus.

I am not trying to be a pro-vegan or vegetarian (heck I've smelled bad breath and strong body odor on the most blindly fanatical of both kinds of people before) but, from experiments and being a nature lover, all vegetarian animals-free of human captivity or at least allowed to eat their natural diets (for examples the grazing cattle who consume only grass) DO NOT have any bad breath.

For a good example of a suggested daily menu plan, look for my article on "How to get rid of Acne in 10 days" on this site as space is a constricting factor at this time.

2. Practice basic natural oral hygiene. As I indicated in the core e-book of my site, practitioners of Yoga such as the hard-core ones in India, Africa and even here in the USA know of such ancient techniques of cleansing the body that-though not as necessary for the beginner-are very, very effective for eliminating bad breath.

Type "kunjar kriya" up in Google and read what this process is. Being an advanced technique that must be practiced under supervision, a simple and less repugnant (if you think) process will be:

-Brushing the teeth with a toothbrush and pure all natural un-iodized Sea-salt or using an African Chewing stick or even a firm toothbrush exclusively. I always get compliments on my dentition and smile and besides my mother's genes (if I may be so vain) using one of these methods has proven to me to be the safer and more effective methods of dental hygiene as outlined in chapter 11 of the text mentioned elsewhere in this article.

-Massage the gums with your clean index fingers. This essential practice strengthens the gums and cleans out impurities from its pores.

-After this; join the index, middle and ring fingers and massage the back of the tongue thoroughly for the same purpose.

-When you are done with these two procedures, scrape the tongue thoroughly with a tongue scraper designed exclusively for this or a blunt bread-knife. Intermittently, between all the steps above, you should rinse the mouth with warm saline water and ensure to gargle with this solution upon completion.

As you may have observed from the steps above (and in most of my articles) alleviating the symptom of a discomfort such as bad breath is mostly a two-part procedure: A drastic change in the diet (internal) and natural cleansing procedures/exercises (external). To complete the three limbs of Naturopathy, your positive and open-minded approach in reading this article takes care of the positive thinking aspect.

It never ceases to amaze me how the population so naively accepts mere fads, hyped products and so called drugs to eradicate the myriad of our modern day ailments, but take it from a guy who suffered (note the PAST tense) from asthma, acne, bad breath and depression for a long length of time, most if not all common diseases of this age can and will be things of the past if some basic all-natural methods such as the steps above for bad breath are applied.

Natural Cure for Bad Breath

Is there a natural cure for bad breath that works? There may well be, but it probably won't be as simple as taking a pill or gargling with a solution of some kind. The first step to finding a cure for halitosis that doesn't require the use of drugs and chemicals is to take a close look at your lifestyle. It's a fact that diet and habits such as alcohol consumption can contribute to breath odor. Is there anything you can change to make your mouth a happier place?

A diet for a healthy body is also a good diet for treating bad breath. It's not hard to get dietary advice these days - we hear about what makes up a healthy diet almost daily. In a nutshell, try to get lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals, and plant sources of protein.

You may want to take a vitamin supplement - vitamins B and C, and the mineral zinc are all important for good oral health. Avoid foods that are high in fat, sugar, and additives. Acidic foods can be a problem, including tea and coffee. For some individuals, food allergies and intolerances can contribute to bad breath - dairy products and meat are particularly known for this. If you suspect certain foods are causing problems for you, try eliminating them to see if it makes a difference. A healthy diet that's right for you may be the only natural cure for bad breath that you need.

Another lifestyle factor that shouldn't be overlooked in treating bad breath is oral hygiene and professional oral care. Brush your teeth after each meal and floss daily to remove food particles from between the teeth. See your dentist immediately if you notice any problems with your teeth or gums, and at a minimum, have an oral checkup once each year. Problems that are caught early are much more easily treated with a natural cure for bad breath or a simple behavioral change. Some medical problems are thought to contribute to bad breath as well, so consider consulting your family physician if you think you have a chronic bad breath problem. Conditions that may be involved include sinus and throat infections or chronic sinusitis, digestive disorders, or certain prescription drugs that are taken regularly.

Beyond lifestyle changes, you can choose a natural remedy for bad breath from a large collection of folk and herbal lore. You could try brushing with baking soda, fennel extract, or tea tree oil (but don't swallow these). Chew parsley or mint, whole cloves, cinnamon bark, anise, cardamom, hazelnuts, basil, wintergreen, sage, or other aromatic herbs. Some herbs not only have a pleasant odor but they also have antibacterial properties. Try taking alfalfa tablets, activated charcoal, apple cider vinegar, chlorophyll tablets, spirulina for treating bad breath, or gargle with salt water, myrrh, or an herbal tea.

Remember, however, that many of these ways of treating bad breath only provide temporary relief. Many of them have strong pleasant odors and can mask bad breath odor for a time, but few have any really effective antibacterial action. A true natural cure for bad breath will get rid of some of the odor producing bacteria that thrive in the mouth, and hopefully help to establish a more normal population of bacteria in the mouth. While it's hard to find a commercial product that is both natural and effective, a few do come close. Look for products that don't contain chlorhexidine or other antibacterial chemicals, but attack the bacteria by some other mechanism, such as physically removing them or exposing them to oxygen.

Causes of Bad Breath: New Research Reveals True Cause

What Causes Bad Breath:

Three Leading Factors Did you know:
1. Medications (including allergy medications) cause bad breath
2. Alcoholic beverages cause bad breath
3. Mouthwash with alcohol causes bad breath
4. Smoking causes bad breath
5. Dry mouth causes bad breath

The fact is that everyday common over-the-counter hygiene products, beverages an medications can be the "mysterious" cause of your bad breath! Medications and alcohol dry out the mouth, creating less saliva which leads to less oxygen in the mouth. This combination creates the perfect breeding ground for the Anaerobic Sulfur-Producing Bacteria that cause bad breath.

In short simple terms, oral bacteria cause bad breath. Think of your breath in the morning, probably not top-notch. At night your mouth is at rest and drier than in waking hours, so bacteria grow. Upon waking you're greeted with "morning breath." Likewise, when you are sick and congested, possibly breathing out of your mouth, you probably noticed your breath smells. This is caused by dry mouth which creates bacteria which causes bad breath.

How do I Avoid the Bacteria That Causes Bad Breath?

Bad breath is caused by excessive bacteria in the mouth. Scientific study and clinical research on bacteria has helped experts discover why bacteria causes bad breath and how to best eliminate it. Surprisingly, those commercials and ads that tell us to pop a mint or use a mouth wash to deal with bad breath are always accurate. In fact many of the mints and washes people use to combat bad breath, actually cause bad breath or make it worse.

How so? The bacteria that cause bad breath live and breed beneath the tongue's surface, on the tonsils and in the throat, not on the surface where it can be scraped or brushed off or dissolved with a wash or mint. Instead of getting rid of bad breath, many of these products contain alcohol which dries out the mouth creating a more favorable environment for these odorous bacteria to grow.

Does Food Cause Bad Breath?

You bet your garlic breadsticks they do. Certain foods like garlic and onions can cause bad breath because they contain the same compounds, previously discussed, that create bad breath. If you regularly consume these foods, it can create higher amounts of bacteria and lead to halitosis. The catch is that the Anaerobic Sulfur-Producing Bacteria that can cause bad breath are in everyone's mouth, because they are needed to assist in breaking down proteins in certain foods. Researchers are still searching for a reason why some people are prone to develop more of the beneficial bacteria, which in bulk are no longer beneficial because they cause bad breath.

The Secret to Getting Rid of Bad Breath (halitosis) is.

To truly eliminate the cause of bad breath you must eliminate the odorous bacteria by converting them to non-odorous volatile sulfur compounds. Okay, sounds complicated, right? In other words, make sure you are using the right type of bad breath eliminator to do the job for you. This cannot be done with mouthwashes or mints. These give your mouth a strong taste, which then leads you to believe if your mouth tastes "medicated" or minty, then your breath must smell good.

How To Stop Bad Breath In 4 Refreshing Steps

OK, no more excuses. Here's how to stop making everyone laugh behind your back after getting a whiff of your noxious breath.

Do you secretly fear that your breath is making people gag? Well you can stop the paranoia right now. Here’s how!

Step 1: Scrape your tongue
The first source of a rotten mouth is a tongue smothered in festering bacteria. If your tongue is fuzzy white, you can bet that that layer of filth is making your breath hideous. Scrap off that white coating with a soft toothbrush or a special tongue scraper - you can get one from any drugstore.

Step 2: Gargle with diluted hydrogen peroxide twice a day

After you scrap off those bacteria, you can mix one part water with one part hydrogen peroxide and gargle with it for 45 seconds. The hydrogen peroxide gets real foamy in your mouth, but it helps to kill the excess bacteria that make your breath stink.

Don’t overdo the hydrogen peroxide though. Give yourself 2-5 day breaks from the hydrogen peroxide because too much of this solution in your mouth can decompose the enamel on your teeth.

Step 3: Eat foods that make your breath smell better

There’s a ton of food you can eat to make your breath smell better. And the fact is, you usually smell like what you’re eating. Drink teas like peppermint, Moroccan mint, jasmine, hibiscus and lemon balm to freshen up your mouth. Don’t add sugar because you’ll totally ruin the cooling effect if you do.

Add fresh foods like ginger, parsley, cilantro and scallions to your meals. Make sure these foods are not cooked. Eating them raw helps restore the natural balance of colon bacteria, which ultimately leads to fresher breath.

Step 4: Empty your colon

OK, imagine this: your colon is directly tied to your mouth. If your colon is a filthy overcrowded cesspool, your breath will stink on an astronomical scale. That’s why stinky smells either go out the anus, seep through the skin, or puff out of the mouth. Which way do you prefer?

Eating bran will help you cleanse your colon. You can also try an herbal laxative. Whatever you do, do not take drugs to get regular bowel movements unless your doctor tells you to. That’s because most constipation drugs make your colon weaker and less efficient at pushing out the garbage and that’s the last thing you need.

Another thing, always make sure that your stinky breath is not the result of some fungi invasion. Here’s a simple fungus test that you can use at home: First thing in the morning, spit into a glass of water. Don’t drink this. Let the water set for a day. If at the end of the day, you see stringy white substances in the glass, you could have a fungal infection.

Now, stop making people dizzy and start making them smile with your newfound methods for fearlessly fresh breath.

Bad Breath - Is it destroying your confidence?

Whilst this may sound like a weird heading to be linking confidence and bad breath together many sufferers of breath problems will know exactly what I mean.

How often have you turned your head slightly when talking to someone to avoid breathing on them? Or had someone comment on how bad your breath smells. It is like being slapped in the face. No body likes it including me. But there is a way to control it or even stop it all together.

In the following page you will find out exactly how I overcome bad breath and some of the finer details about breath related problems.

What causes Bad Breath?

In most cases bad breath (halitosis) is caused by or related to oral bacteria. The wastes of oral bacteria are actually sulfur compounds and it is usually these compounds that will be the cause of your bad breath.

The build up of plaque can also largely contribute to the production of oral bacteria. It only takes a layer of .1 to .2 of a millimeter of plaque to provide an environment in which this bacteria can flourish.

What about foods, can they be a cause?

Absolutely, eating foods and drinks such as garlic, onions, cheese, orange juice, soda, meat product, dairy products and high protein foods.

Also when food becomes lodged between your teeth and around the gums it lends a very big part in the production of oral bacteria.

How do I treat bad breath.

In almost all cases bad breath is caused by a problem of some sort in the mouth. In which case it stands to reason that a visit to the dentist can help determine what is wrong. In the case that you may need dental treatment this may be the cause of your problems.

However if no oral cause can be found then it is possible that a trip to a clinic or practice that specializes in bad breath is required.

Bad Breath - What you can do to prevent it.

That being said I suffered a rude awakening when my girlfriend started commenting on my breath problems (being a dental nurse I respect her opinion in this regard). So I consulted my dentist.

I was told to floss regularly, shown how to brush properly and also suggested I use closys II as a mouth wash.

I have not had bad breath since I have started using Closys II and in my opinion is the best mouthwash out. To read more about Closys II go to http://www.toothwhiteningaustralia.com.au/bad-breath-treatment.php

Here are the steps outlined below that you can use to prevent bad breath

Brush regularly twice a day if possible.
Ensure that you floss each day.
Make sure you drink enough water (This can help flush your mouth of unwanted food particles)
Use a mouthwash after brushing. For best effect do this at night time.

I have followed these simple steps and no longer worry about bad breath. Neither will you if you put some of the points in this article to good use.
